Bidayuh Beauty Peagant (Dayung Sangon) Competition 2014

Gawai Dayak used to be a very special festival celebrated by the Dayak communities from Bidayuh, Iban, Orang Ulu ,Murut,Kelabit ethnic in Sarawak. The Festival to the dayaks is specially to celeberate the the products especially padi from the farm at the end of the farming season. In conjunction with festival, the Bidayuh working committee was formed to organized Bidayuh Beauty Pageant for 2014 (Dayung Sangon Gawai beauty Pageant).


While Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) which was formed and registered in 1955 is forthcoming, many activities has been organised and scheduled in celeberating its 60th Anniversary by the members particurarily the Central Executive committee and branches throughout the country. The latest activity being the Bidayuh World Bowling Tournment 2014 organised by Kuching Urban branch participated by more than 100 participants held at Lawn Bowl Kuching. Majlis Penyampaian Sijil Taska dan Tadika Bahasa Warisan (Piramin) Peringkat Daerah Bau Tahun 2014

Majlis Tertinggi DBNA turut menyerikan Majlis Penyampaian Sijil Taska dan Tadika Bahasa Warisan (Piramin) Peringkat Daerah Bau Tahun 2014 pada 23 November 2014 di Dewan Serbaguna Kampung Serasot, Bau yang dirasmikan oleh YB Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie, Menteri Muda Pembangunan Perindustrian dan Pembangunan Komuniti Sarawak,  merangkap ADUN N2 Tasik Biru. Turut hadir ialah Datu Ik Pahon Joyik, Presiden DBNA, Temenggong Austin Dinim Niyon, ahli-ahli Majlis Tertinggi DBNA dan ketua-Ketua kaum. Majlis ini dianjurkan bersama oleh Persatuan Bekas Pelajar (Alumni) SK Serasot (PBPSKS), Bau dengan JK Piramin Kampung Serasot, Bau. Pengerusi Pengelola Majlis ialah En. Misoi Nyilot, yang juga Timbalan Presiden Persatuan Bekas Pelajar (Alumni) SK Serasot.

Dalam ucap utamanya, YB Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie mencadangkan sebuah Dewan Bahasa Bidayuh (Bidayuh Language Council) diwujudkan untuk memartabatkan Bahasa Bidayuh. Jika dewan ini dapat diwujudkan, beliau berjanji akan menyumbangkan RM100,000 untuk menyokong penubuhannya. Beliau juga berjanji untuk memberi sumbangan sebanyak RM10,000 bagi setiap penubuhan taska atau tadika di kawasan beliau iaitu ADUN N2 Tasik Biru. Majlis diteruskan dengan penyerahan sebuah cek bernilai RM5000 oleh Datuk Peter kepada Presiden Persatuan Bekas Pelajar (Alumni) SK Serasot, Cr. Mattew Jikah Anak Nowek. Selepas upacara penyampaian sijil dan hadiah galakan disempurnakan, para tetamu kehormat dan jemputan dijemput untuk menjamu selera bersama dengan ahli-ahli jawatankuasa kerja majlis.

Padawan Raft Safari 2014

It was a day full of splashing and fun for the people around Penrissen when they came in full force to join the Padawan Raft Safari that was held along the Semedang River the 3rd of August 2014.

The starting point was at Kampung Danu and kicked off at 8.00am where it finished at Kampung Git with a total distant of 16 KM downstream. YB Datuk Dr Jerib Susil flagged off the challenge this year. The raft was made of joint bamboo and could accommodate up to 5 paddlers each.

Around 100 teams participated in different categories this year. The gruelling journey to the finishing line was not easy especially to those who were not familiar with the river terrain. This year DBNA Penrissen Branch headed by Mr Aloysius Kuyong with its Advisor and CEC member Mr Paul Akui Bandat had submitted 2 teams to join in the race.

The guest of honour was YB Dato Sri Dr James Dawos Mamit and the Chairman of MPP Mr Lo Khere Chiang waited at the finishing line to give away prizes to the winners. While waiting at Kampung Git, visitors visited booths that sold souvenirs and Bidayuh costumes and also sang at the Karaoke booth. Lots of foods and drinks were being sold to visitors.

DBNA teams managed to grab 4th and 7th position respectively. Next year they would try again and with proper preparation, training and endurance.

DBNA & SBGA delegates attended Sarawak TYT and CM’s Hari Raya Open House

Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) and Sarawak Bidayuh Graduates Association (SBGA) members, led by their Advisor and Minister of Infrastructure Development and Communication, Dato Sri Michael Manyin anak Jawong and DBNA President cum Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Tourism Sarawak, Datu Ik Pahon Joyik, visited Tuan Yang Terutama (TYT) Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud’s Hari Raya Open House on Monday (28 July 2014) at the Istana Negeri Sarawak in Petra Jaya, Kuching. The delegates had a joint audience with the TYT and his wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib, where they were later invited to lunch at the Istana.

The visit signifies the longstanding tradition of the Bidayuh representatives attending the TYT’s Open House which fosters the warm relationship between Bidayuh community and the leaders of the state.

After the visit at the Istana Negeri, the delegates proceeded to BCCK to attend the Chief Minister of Sarawak, Tan Sri Adenan Bin Satem’s open house. There were thousands of visitors waiting in line to meet in person the newly appointed Chief Minister of Sarawak. This year is Tan Sri Adenan Bin Satem’s first Hari Raya open house as the Chief Minister of Sarawak.

After the head of state visits, DBNA and SBGA Exco members procceeded to other Sarawak ministers’ open house as well.

DBNA joined SK St. James Quop Centennial Anniversary Dinner

SK St. James Quop Centennial Anniversary Dinner was held on the 26th July 2014 at the Crown Imperial Hall, Crown Tower. The dinner was organised by the School Board of Management which the guest of honor was the Right Reverend Assistant Bishop Aeris Sumping Jingan representing His Grace The Most Reverend Datuk Bolly Lapok, Archbishop of the Anglican Province of South East Asia cum Chairman of the Sarawak Anglican School Board of Management.

The Exco members of the Dayak Bidayuh National Association (DBNA) was invited to join in the celebration with them. It was full of down the memory lane kind of dinner where the oldest student receiving a plaque from the school management, Mr Jin Chung Anak Joshua was borned on the 18th February 1918. Mr Rebid Anak Duka was the oldest Headmaster who served in the school. All the award was jointly presented by YB Datuk Roland Sagah and the Right Reverend Assistant Bishop Aeris Sumping Jingan. The Organising Chairman was Mr Donald Ah Guan who himself was also the Chairman of DBNA Samarahan Branch.

DBNA President Datu Ik Pahon Joyik joined the high table together with Right Reverend Assistant Bishop Aeris Sumping Jingan and YB Datuk Roland Sagah Wee Inn, Deputy Speaker of the State Legislative Assembly and YB for N.17 Tarat. Bidayuh Temenggong for Kuching Mr Austin Dimin was also among the VIPs during the function.

Beautiful pieces presented by the choir group of St. James Church and also the pupils of the school. Cake cutting and toast was held during function as well. The night continue with the band boys rendering requested song by the diners.

9th Gawai Dayak Carnival at Redeems Centre at Kampung Apar, Singai

DBNA Central Executive Committees joined 1,000 people attended the 9th Gawai Dayak Carnival at Redeems Centre at Kampung Apar, Singai, which featured cultural dance performances. 9 door longhouse was erected for visitors to enjoy the atmosphere of the Bidayuh hospitality with authentic foods and ‘tuak tobuh’.

Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin said ‘The Gawai celebration is a significant festival in Sarawak which can contribute to the country’s tourism industry’

He said the celebration, which falls in June every year, could become a major tourist attraction due to its uniqueness and Sarawak was already well-known for its strong unity and harmonious multiracial society.

He is confident with what Sarawak has to offer, it can continue to attract more tourists and help pull tourists to Malaysia, adding the unity of people in Sarawak was something everyone should be proud of and must be preserved.

He said a united people were the backbone of the county, pointing out that without unity the country would not be able to move forward and become a high income and developed nation by 2020.

Also present were Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Abdul Taib Mahmud and wife Toh Puan Ragad Kurdi Taib, Chief Minister Tan Sri Adenan Satem and State Minister’s and Civil servants.
